Research shows that Yerba Mate effectively decreases the levels of bad cholesterol. In a recent study, volunteers who drank the tea infusion for 40 days had a cholesterol drop of 10 to 12%. However, in some cases the volunteer’s cholesterol dropped by an astounding 40%.
Scientists say these results are due to the action of the saponins (phytochemicals) found in the Yerba Mate leaves. Phytochemicals are also known as “natural detergent” compounds which bind with cholesterol, so it cannot be reabsorbed into the system and is secreted from the body. The study also showed the Yerba Mate can potentiate the effects of commercial drugs used to combat cholesterol. When these things are used together, the reduction in the cholesterol levels can be four times higher.
