Consumption trends in natural products
Within the niche of products with natural compositions, the yerba mate use, specially in cosmetics is the one costumers are looking for when it comes to self care items containing as few chemical additives as possible.
The choices reflect concern about components in cosmetics that are considered toxic, aligned with a strong preference for more sustainable companies, since there is now a greater awareness of environmental preservation.
The concrete growth potential of this market has been studied by Grand View Research, in a report which states that by 2025, the global organic personal care market is expected to reach US$ 25.11 billion.
Benefits of Yerba Mate in cosmetics
The caffeine present in yerba mate is one of its most popular properties, but in reality, this traditional plant from the south of Brazil, Argentina, Paraguay and Uruguay has more than 200 bioactive compounds that can be exploited in various products.
One of the most appreciated properties by the cosmetics industry are its antioxidants. Especially the polyphenols, which help the skin to neutralize free radicals, preveting premature aging, and also helping against the daily stress that the skin suffers, such as exposure to solar radiation, ultraviolet light, pollution, among other factors.
Yerba Mate is anti-inflammatory and astringent. Ideal component for products that focus on anti-acne treatments. It can be used to produce moisturizers, creams, serums, ointments, soaps, shampoos, conditioners, deodorants and perfumes. It also contains vitamins A, C, E and the B complex, essential components for healthy skin, hair and nails.
Major brands such as Natura already use yerba mate in their products. The brand even launched an exclusive line some time ago, Ekos Mate Verde, which includes liquid and bar soap and a men's deodorant cologne.
Case
Amazonia Skin Food is a brand that produces sustainable cosmetics in the United States. Although it is located there, the raw material used to make the products come from Brazilian forests. These include fruits such as açaí and buriti, cocoa, arrowroot, green coffee beans and yerba mate.
The company was born out of Rose Corrêa and Shane Lindner's passion for natural products. "I wanted to develop a line of skincare products that would be totally safe and effective for sensitive or allergic skin, and environmentally friendly. So I chose natural, vegan and organic products that had the same components as today's industrialized products, but without dyes, fragrances, aggressive preservatives or any other type of substance that could be harmful to the skin or the environment," explained Rose.
Rose is Brazilian, from the state of Santa Catarina, a region where the cultivation of yerba mate is very traditional. As she was already very familiar with the plant, she didn't hesitate to include it in her products.
She explains that the use of the plant in her products brings a variety of benefits to improve the health and appearance of the skin, as it is a natural source of vitamins A, C, E and the B complex. "This makes it a very rich antioxidant, which helps protect the skin from damage caused by free radicals and the loss of radiance due to age or pollution. It's also a good moisturizer and helps keep the skin hydrated," she says.
Taking the word sustainability seriously, as well as using natural ingredients, Amazonian SkinFood donates 10% of sales to support forest conservation projects and indigenous peoples in Brazil.
Cosmetics contain dried yerba mate extract
Yerba mate in cosmetics is added to the composition as a dry extract not as leaves. The difference lies in the preparation of the raw material. While yerba mate for traditional use is simply dried and crushed, the extract goes through a whole process to preserve its bioactive properties and turn the leaves into poder. Check out the steps:
- Drying the leaves: process to reduce humidity and preserve the active compounds;
- Extraction: the dried leaves are subjected to an extraction process, often using methods such as maceration in solvents or infusion in water;
- Concentration and drying: the extract obtained is concentrated to increase its potency and then subjected to a drying process to obtain the dry extract;
- Standardization and quality: the final product is standardized to ensure a consistent concentration of active compounds and subjected to strict quality standards.
