The free radicals found on the Yerba Mate help fight the accumulated fat plaques that are responsible for heart attacks and other heart diseases by moving the fat and cholesterol through your bloodstream instead of accumulating on the artery walls. Studies conducted by the Federal University of Santa Catarina (UFSC) shows that the existing phenolic compounds in the yerba mate can inhibit cholesterol oxidation, contributing to the prevention of atherosclerosis (hardening of the arteries).
